It was "First entry!"

Yeah, a lot of thought went into that one.

01:39 am - Browsers
Earlier tonight my computer downloaded a few Windows updates, and I told it to install them. Without seeing what they were first. One was Internet Explorer 8.

When I "upgraded" to IE7 some time ago, I thought it totally sucked at first, but then I got used to it and decided it only partially sucked, and kept using it. I liked the tabs.

When I "upgraded" to IE8 tonight, did I miss something in the fine print that read "your entire browser history will disappear" somewhere following the part about my settings not being changed? I'm really pissed off but I don't know if I should be pissed off at myself or at Microsoft.

Some of you will say I should be pissed off at myself for using IE in the first place. Hi, Lane!

Now I'm using Safari, but I'm not too thrilled with it either. So I'm going to try Firefox, but at almost 2:00 in the morning I have no ambition to start that process at the moment.

What do you use? Does anything other than IE have tabs?

I need to get some sleep. Good night! Hope your Independence Day was good.

Post your top fifteen bands / artists, the first song you heard of theirs, the song that made you fall in love, and your current favorite.

I'm not so sure about the "fall in love" part, and they're in no particular order. Also, it was hard to settle on only 15. From [info]amandafer:

① Leona Naess
first song ~ New York Baby
song that made me fall in love ~ Lazy Days
current fave ~ All The Stars

② Fiona Apple
first song ~ Shadow Boxer
song that made me fall in love ~ The First Taste
current fave ~ The Way Things Are

③ Cat Power
first song ~ The Greatest
song that made me fall in love ~ The Greatest
current fave ~ The Greatest

④ Ivy
first song ~ Nothing But The Sky
song that made me fall in love ~ Keep Moving
current fave ~ Keep Moving

⑤ Delerium
first song ~ Silence (featuring Sarah McLachlan)
song that made me fall in love ~ Silence
current fave ~ Self Saboteur

⑥ Sia
first song ~ Destiny (with Zero 7)
song that made me fall in love ~ Destiny
current fave ~ I Go To Sleep

⑦ Kate Havnevik
first song ~ Unlike Me
song that made me fall in love ~ Kaleidoscope
current fave ~ Travel In Time

⑧ Sarah McLachlan
first song ~ I Will Remember You
song that made me fall in love ~ Possession
current fave ~ Sweet Surrender

⑨ Katie Melua
first song ~ Shy Boy
song that made me fall in love ~ Spider's Web
current fave ~ Tiger In The Night

⑩ KT Tunstall
first song ~ Black Horse and the Cherry Tree
song that made me fall in love ~ Other Side of the World
current fave ~ Other Side of the World

⑪ Supreme Beings of Leisure
first song ~ Never The Same
song that made me fall in love ~ Never The Same
current fave ~ Rock and a Hard Place

⑫ Tare MacLean
first song ~ Poor Boy
song that made me fall in love ~ Passenger
current fave ~ Evidence

⑬ Trespassers William
first song ~ Vapour Trail
song that made me fall in love ~ Different Stars
current fave ~ Untitled

⑭ Cowboy Junkies
first song ~ A Common Disaster
song that made me fall in love ~ Something More Besides You
current fave ~ Angel Mine

⑮ The Moody Blues
first song ~ Nights In White Satin
song that made me fall in love ~ Emily's Song
current fave ~ When You're A Free man

I'f I'd done this a month ago, or if I do it again a month from now, there would probably be different answers.

I guess by now everybody knows Dr. George Tiller was murdered today. Pro-life extremists apparently don't know what "pro-life" means.

From [info]socktree, with whom I agree completely, and with [info]amandafer in mind:

Randall Terry never ceases to piss me off.

It seems that the people who most want to force a woman to carry an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy to term without regard to any of her own personal considerations, are the same people who are totally against two things that would greatly reduce the number of abortions: comprehensive sex education and access to birth control. Why is that?

From [info]amanderpanderer, who found this through USCA's Unity Gay-Straight Alliance. I agree with her that it's very nicely done.

01:03 pm - With friends like these...
http://wbztv.com/local/lowell.murder.teen.2.1009440.html

So let me see if I got this straight. There was an earlier altercation of some sort. Someone fired shots at the driver of a car, missed, and hit this unfortunate young woman instead. Then what happened? They stopped the car, threw her out onto the side of the road, and drove away. These were her friends?

The police aren't charging them with anything because even if they'd taken her to a hospital she probably would have died anyway?

01:41 am - Happy Mothers Day!
I seem to have lost track of how many of my livejournal friends are moms. Ten or twelve maybe.

Or, it could be eleven. :)

I hope your kids do something nice for you today, or at least show a little appreciation.

12:17 am - Now, for something different...
It occurred to me that I've used the same default userpic for about five years and eight months of the five years and nine months that I've had this journal. It's way past time for a change, no? Just because my user name is flying-related, it doesn't mean my userpic always has to be.

10:42 pm - Writer's Block: Celebrating Friendships

Over the past ten years, many friendships have started and/or been renewed on LiveJournal. Of your current LJ friends, who have you known the longest?

View other answers

They would have to be the ones I knew before I had a livejournal, but I can't say for sure which of the three I've known the longest: [info]cairine, [info]irach, who lives on Myspace now and never updates here anymore, and [info]evolving4ever who was [info]voluptuousvegan at the time.

11:48 pm - I wonder if I just witnessed a crime...
When I was taking the recycle bins down to the end of the driveway, some guy was slowly and painstakingly pushing a gas grill up the sidewalk across the street. He seemed to be having a really hard time steering it. Tomorrow is trash pickup day on our street so it was probably being thrown away. I hope so, anyway.

11:22 pm - Who Knows Where Or When?
There's a version of this song playing in my head that isn't the one I'm listening to. I don't even know if it's real, but there's a tenor sax or some such, and I knew the words. So I must have heard it before, but I can't remember where or when.

EDIT: It IS real! Found it on Rhapsody. Dion & The Belmonts.

11:44 am - Phelps-A-Thon Revisited
Yvonne Abraham's column in today's Boston Globe was about the Phelps clan's recent visit to the area. I hadn't really followed up on my earlier post about the Phelps-A-Thon at Cambridge Rindge and Latin, but it appears to have been a tremendous success with over $3600 raised. This should easily inspire other groups to try something similar at other locations.

And on another subject, Change has come to Washington )
